Here’s what you’ll need:
A clear bottle
A funnel (optional)
First fill your bottle 1/4 of the way full with water.
Next add vegetable oil using a funnel to fill the bottle.
Add some food colouring (watch as it sinks down into the water).
Finally add a few pieces of alka seltzer that have been broken up.
Voila – your very own lava lamp!!!
Try with different coloured food colouring and add more or less alka seltzer for varied effects. You can even put a lid on your bottle for use another day!
How it works:
When you add alka seltzer, the carbon dioxide that is produced rises to the surface bringing water and food colouring along with it. When the carbon dioxide is released at the top of the bottle, the water and food colouring sink back down because it is more dense than the oil.
